How Often Should You Service Your AC in Los Angeles?
Southern California systems work hard. Here is a practical maintenance schedule.
In much of Los Angeles, air conditioners run for a large part of the year — and inland neighborhoods in the Valley and San Gabriel Valley see long stretches of high heat. Regular service helps keep your system running reliably when you need it most.
Professional maintenance: at least once a year
Most manufacturers recommend professional maintenance at least annually. Spring is ideal, before the first heat wave. If you have a heat pump that handles both heating and cooling, twice a year — spring and fall — is a common recommendation.
Filters: every one to three months
Filter needs vary with filter type, pets, construction nearby and wildfire smoke. Check monthly during heavy use and replace when dirty.
What a maintenance visit covers
- Filter inspection
- Coil inspection
- Electrical inspection
- Condensate drainage
- Thermostat operation
- System performance
- Refrigerant-system checks where appropriate
Between visits
Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and plants, avoid closing too many supply vents, and pay attention to new noises or smells. If something seems off, it is easier to address early.
