5 Signs Your AC Needs Repair

Small warning signs often show up before an air conditioner stops working. Here is what to watch for.

Most air conditioners do not fail all at once. They usually give you hints first — a new noise, a room that never quite cools down, or a bill that is higher than last summer. Catching these signs early can make the difference between a straightforward repair and a system that quits during a heat wave.

1. Warm or weak airflow

If the air from your vents feels warm, or the airflow is noticeably weaker than usual, something is restricting the system or keeping it from removing heat. Start by checking your air filter — a clogged filter is one of the most common causes. If a clean filter does not help, the cause could be a dirty coil, a failing blower motor, a refrigerant leak or an electrical component such as a capacitor.

2. Unusual noises

A healthy system makes a steady hum. Grinding, squealing, banging or repeated clicking can point to worn motor bearings, a loose part or an electrical problem. Turning the system off and scheduling an inspection can help prevent a small issue from damaging other components.

3. Water or ice where it should not be

Your AC removes moisture from the air, and that water should drain away. Puddles near the indoor unit often mean a clogged condensate drain. Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil usually points to restricted airflow or low refrigerant. In either case, turn the system off and have it checked.

4. Short cycling

If your AC turns on and off every few minutes, it may be short cycling. Causes range from thermostat placement or settings to an oversized system or an electrical fault. Short cycling wears out components faster and often leaves the home feeling clammy.

5. Rising energy bills

Los Angeles summers vary, but if your bill climbs without a clear reason, your system may be working harder than it should. Dirty coils, low refrigerant and failing parts all reduce efficiency.

What to do next

Check the filter, make sure the thermostat is set to cool, and confirm the breaker has not tripped. If the problem continues, it is time for a professional diagnosis. We will explain what we find and provide pricing before any authorized work begins.
